EFCC Releases Obidient Supporters Peter Akah and Mama Pee After Interrogation Over Alleged Naira Abuse

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released two prominent members of the Obidient Movement, Peter Akah and Oruche Precious, popularly known as Mama Pee, after several hours of interrogation over allegations of naira abuse.

The EFCC has released Obidient Movement supporters Peter Akah and Mama Pee after hours of questioning over alleged naira abuse. Their lawyer says the money involved was prop currency used for entertainment.

The duo honored an invitation from the anti-graft agency at its headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday and were released shortly after midnight on Thursday. However, they were instructed to return to the commission's office later on Thursday as investigations continue.

EFCC Questions Obidient Supporters

According to activist Chidiebere Mark, popularly known as Justice Crack, who accompanied the pair to the EFCC headquarters, Akah and Mama Pee arrived at the commission around 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday and remained there for nearly 11 hours before being released.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Justice Crack confirmed that both individuals cooperated with investigators and were later asked to report back to the EFCC for the continuation of the investigation.

Lawyer Says Allegation Involves Prop Money

Providing an update on Thursday, human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who represented the two supporters, disclosed that the investigation centers on allegations of naira abuse.

The EFCC has released Obidient Movement supporters Peter Akah and Mama Pee after hours of questioning over alleged naira abuse. Their lawyer says the money involved was prop currency used for entertainment.

According to Effiong, his clients informed investigators that the money referenced in the allegation was prop currency used for entertainment purposes, not genuine Nigerian naira notes.

"Our clients clarified that what was referenced were props money for entertainment and not naira notes," Effiong said.

He added that both Akah and Mama Pee fully cooperated with investigators throughout the questioning.

EFCC Commended for Professional Conduct

Effiong also praised the EFCC for its handling of the interrogation, describing the commission's conduct as professional throughout the process.

"During the interrogation, which took considerable time, the Commission acted professionally. Our clients are in high spirits and appreciate the concerns expressed by Nigerians regarding their safety," he stated.

The lawyer confirmed that the pair would return to the commission's headquarters as requested to assist with the ongoing investigation.

Social Media Reacts

The prolonged questioning sparked widespread concern among supporters of the Obidient Movement, with many taking to social media to seek updates on the whereabouts of the two activists.

The incident comes amid heightened political tensions following recent claims by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), that opposition figures are facing increasing pressure from the government.

The Federal Government has consistently denied allegations of political persecution.

EFCC Yet to Issue Official Statement

As of the time of filing this report, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale had not issued an official public statement regarding the investigation.

The commission is expected to continue its inquiry after the two supporters return for further questioning.
