After two months in theaters, Funke Akindele's 'Battle on Buka Street' became Nollywood's highest-grossing film ever in February.

The Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) announced on Tuesday that it sold 278 million tickets in cinemas across the country in February.

In one month, Nigeria's box office sales fell from $819 million to $278 million.

Ope Ajayi, CEAN's National Chairman, revealed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, adding that the cinemas had 122,295 gross admissions during the review period.

When compared to the 819 million made in January, cinema sales fell dramatically in February.

Ajayi attributed the drop in sales to a cash crunch and poor network service delivery experienced by POS operators across the country.

He also mentioned that the week of the Presidential and National Assembly elections saw an all-time low in movie theater attendance.

He went on to say that cinemas had limited content to show in February because movie studios avoided releasing films during the election season.

"The drop in sales can be attributed to a number of factors. We lost a weekend of sales because Nigerians were focused on voting across the country during the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

"The cash crunch and POS failures that are affecting trading in general are also affecting the cinemas.

"Many film producers and distributors avoided releasing films during the election season.

As a result, the content was also somewhat limited," he explained.

'Antman' and 'Love in a Pandemic,' according to Ajayi, were the top films shown in cinemas across the country in February.

He mentioned 'Creed III,' 'What Love Got To Do With It,' 'Shazam: Fury Of The Gods,' 'John Wick IV,' 'Different Strokes,' and 'Dungeons and Dragons' as films to look out for in March.
